Saddleback, Tiritiri Matangi, New Zealand
The Tieke (saddleback) became known to Maori as water bird. The saddleback was mentioned in invocations recited when rain was needed, when calling on Rangi, the sky father, to give assistance through his many offspring who control the weather.
This particular saddleback's beak has just been half-dipped into a watering trough at Tiritiri Matangi, New Zealand. During the drier summer months, a variety of birds refresh at the watering stations.
