The Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) is a flightless bird endemic to New Zealand. It is the largest living member of the Rallidae. Thought to be extinct since 1898, the Takahe was rediscovered near Lake Te Anau in the Murchinson Mountains in 1948. The population in the wild is estimated to be a mere 92 as of 2008.
