The spotted shag (Stictocarbo Punctatus) is the most elegant of the New Zealand cormorants. At the start of the breeding season, black crests appear on its forehead and at the back of its head. Long white plumes are scattered over its head and upper parts, and its dark brown eye is ringed with blue and surrounded by a patch of bright green.
