The Leopard Seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is named for its spotted coat and fearsome jaws. It is a long and slim seal that has to drag its body over the ground using a combination of the front flippers and body undulations.
Leopard seals breed in the New Zealand-claimed sector of Antarctica, the Ross Dependency, along with Weddell seals, crabeater seals and Ross seals. Immature seals tend to frequent the waters around subantarctic islands as they migrate north during winter.more »
